Ondulin or metal tile: which is better?

What to choose for your roof of a country house, cottage, garage, bathhouse? Let's understand the features of roofing materials.

When constructing a roof, the question of the choice of roofing inevitably arises. There are a large number of materials for the roof, each of them has advantages and disadvantages. Much depends on the type of construction and its intended purpose.

Usually, several factors influence the choice:

  • Price.
  • Quality (not least depends on the manufacturer).
  • Durability.
  • Mechanical strength, resistance to wind, and snow loads.
  • Ease or complexity of styling.
  • Resistance to chemical attack, fading in the sun, moisture resistance.
  • Heat insulating and sound insulating characteristics.
  • Roof structure: It is known that the type of roofing for roofs with different angles of inclination is chosen in different ways.
  • Aesthetics, compliance with the style of the façade, fashion trends, etc.

Comparison of the features of ondulin and metal tiles

  •  Silence. Ondulin absorbs sounds when it rains or hails. Metal tiles (like any metal coating) are devoid of this property.
  •  Ondulin does not collect condensation when heated in the sun. The metal tile heats up, and to ensure normal vapor barrier properties, an additional waterproofing layer must be installed.
  •  Ondulin is technologically easier to install, lighter in weight, and does not corrode.
  •  The disadvantage of ondulin is that the leaf length is fixed. Unlike metal shingles, they cannot be trimmed as needed. This creates certain difficulties in laying and leads to unnecessary consumption of material: the overlaps have to be made longer than it is necessary for the technology. As a result, the price of such a coating increases significantly due to the irrational consumption of material.
  •  Durability and service life. From time to time there is a need to walk on the roof - for example, to remove snow. Ondulin (like any bituminous coating) is initially more susceptible to temperature changes and atmospheric loads and becomes more fragile. When walking on the roof, you can simply push it through, incl. through.
  • From the point of view of fire safety, it is also worth giving preference to metal tiles.
  • Both coatings are in approximately the same price range. The products of eminent foreign companies may differ sharply, but this is true for both materials. What is preferable in terms of price - it will be possible to say only after a complete calculation of the material for both coatings.
  • Design. Bituminous coatings imply a smaller roof slope angle (up to a flat roof). When installing gable roofs with a large angle, preference is given to various sheet materials, including metal tiles.
  • Aesthetics is a matter of taste and stylistic decision of the whole house, here the choice is solely at the discretion of the owners.
